The Bernheim Middle Jr. Beta Club is a service and academic organization for students that promotes the ideals of character, service and leadership . Students must maintain A's and B's in all academic areas each grading period as well as be a good representative of the school with their behavior and actions on a daily basis. Students are also required to give back to the community with their time. Service hours are a large part of being a member of Bernheim's Beta Club. Returning 7th and 8th grade members must volunteer 50 hours of their time each year. They have from the day after school gets out until the end of the next school year to earn those hours. Members wishing to attend convention must have a set number of hours turned in by the end of Jan. New members are brought in during the second grading period and are required 25 hours before the end of the school year. Students can volunteer anywhere that helps the community (schools, churches, libraries, firehouses, soup kitchens, picking up trash in the local parks or even on their streets). The goal is to give back to the entire community in some way.
All Beta members follow the same guidelines as in the Beta Creed:
As a member of the Beta Club and as a citizen of my community, state, and nation I believe in and shall strive to promote the principles of:
Honesty:
knowing that honesty is necessary to the formation of good character, and that the principles of honesty dictate that I not only refrain from acts of dishonesty; but that I perform my duties fully and take advantage of the opportunities afforded me by my circumstances;
Justice:
believing that it is only right and proper that I should be just and fair in my dealings with my fellowman; that I should condemn no one without giving him a chance to defend himself; and that I should consider all factors before forming an opinion of another's motives, or before passing judgment upon his actions;
Service:
being convinced that the rendering of helpful service to my fellowman is a duty and privilege conferred upon me by my forbears and by my environment, and that I can attain lasting satisfaction only by rendering such service to the best of my ability;
Cooperation:
knowing that I must work closely and in a friendly manner with others in this day of highly organized social and economic endeavor; and that I must respect authority and strive at all times to be dependable-if I am to be of greatest helpfulness to society;
Responsibility:
believing that full happiness is possible only through full acceptance of responsibility for my actions and for preserving and passing my rich inheritance on to coming generations;
Industriousness:
being aware of the of the fact that-if I am to be a factor for progress in my community and a real help to my associates-my mind must be alert to understand and my hands ready to perform promptly and fully the tasks that come my way;
Humility:
being convinced that humbleness of spirit is the only proper attitude for me to maintain in my relation with my associates, and that such spirit and attitude will make for my own peace of mind and for the well-being of those with whom I come in contact;
Charity:
knowing that if I am- tolerant in my appraisal of the ideas of others; generous in the use of my worldly assets; considerate of the rights of others; courteous in my actions toward all alike; gentle in my efforts to correct errors in others; kind in the exercise of my duties- I shall then be better able to contribute to the happiness of myself and others.
Bernheim Middle has had an active Jr. Beta Club since the fall of 2001. The club was originally established as Shepherdsville Jr. High School before the school moved to its current location and was renamed Bernheim Middle. Upon moving to Bernheim, the club was inactive until 2001. During the 2001-2002 school year the club had 27 active 7th and 8th graders with 12 attending the school's first state convention. At the first convention, students went to observe the types of competitions. Beginning the next year, 2003, our club became a competitive club. Our first win at the state level was in arts and crafts in 2004. From that time forward, we have had numerous state level winners. Our first state winner that competed at nationals was Maegan Capps in 2006. That summer we traveled to Greensboro, SC for competition. While she did not win that year, that was the beginning of a legacy for Bernheim's Beta Club.
Throughout the years we have had state winners place in the various arts and crafts categories, special talent, songfest, academic competitions, as well as state officers ( four to date: Nathan Hall - Secretary (2009), Jacob Calvert- Secretary (2010), Kelsin Kemble - Chaplain (2011), and Avery Lee - Secretary (2015). We have also had several students place at the national level in each of the previously mentioned competitions including a national officer. Jacob Calvert won the national office of Secretary in the summer of 2010 and traveled to various states during him term (2010-2011).
Students travel and stay in downtown Louisville or Lexington each Jan./Feb. to compete at the state convention. Students have traveled and competed in the following locations for national convention: Greensboro, NC (2 times), Nashville, TN (3 times), Myrtle Beach, SC, Orlando, FL (2 times), Mobile, AL, Louisville, KY, and Richmond, VA. The 2018 national convention will be held in Savannah, GA in June.
Beta Club students have been attending leadership summits for the last several years as well in the fall. Approximately 15 of the members are selected to attend these regional summits with hundreds of other students. The last few years we have traveled to the Gatlinburg, TN area.
